Celebrity hair stylist Michael Angelo is famous for working his magic backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows transforming the Angels’ manes into beautiful, beach-wavy works of art. The New Jersey native works with the crème de la crème of the catwalk’s elite, from Agyness Deyn to Bridget Malcolm. And the models can’t get enough of him, so much so that in 2014 Elle honored him with their Beauty Genius Award and dubbed him “The Model Whisperer.”
So naturally, while visiting his imaginative playground, aka his fabulous Meat Packing District salon Wonderland Beauty Parlor (which for the record is just as whimsical as it sounds with glittering floors and a fuschia chaise lounge), I had the Jersey City resident teach us how to get the iconic Victoria’s Secret sexy beach waves at home. And it’s surprisingly a lot easier than you think. As a member of his good friend Sarah Potempa‘s Beachwaver team, his secret weapon is the magical curling iron and lots (and I mean lots) of texturing spray. Watch below to find out how simple it is to transform into Gigi Hadid or Lily Aldridge.
Michael tells me the key to getting Victoria’s Secret glam is Sarah’s game-changing hair tool, The Beachwaver. If you’ve been living under a rock the past couple years and don’t know what it is, here’s the low-down. Essentially it’s a rotating curling iron that you control when you’re doing your own hair, and it’s super easy to use. Those fabulous waves and curls that just drifted down the runway at the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris were all courtesy of The Beachwaver (and Michael of course who was backstage again this year working his magic). This curling wand is so amazing it’s been named the official hair tool of the show for the second year in a row!
“Its really pretty hair. It’s easy, it’s sexy,” he tells me. “I think most heterosexual women love to have hair that looks hot for boys, at least once in a while. I think Victoria’s Secret is the iconic sexy hair.”
Create curls with The Beachwaver that go in alternating directions, while leaving ends out of the iron. “It should look a little relaxed and I think a little relaxed is a little accessible,” Michael says. “I think a little accessible is sexy.”
Let your hair cool, then rake your fingers and brushes through it. “Cool is really key. I think sometimes people are so quick to run their fingers through the hair,” he says. “You want to let it cool off just enough so it sets firm. And you can feel it when it’s cool. Then you can break up the curls and not worry about them falling out.”
Spray texturizing spray section by section in short bursts (and don’t be stingy — the more the merrier). Michael reccomends Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray (a personal favorite of mine too, great minds!). “I see sometime people shhhhhh (spray all over on top of head) and you really want to get up and underneath the sections you create,” he says. “Otherwise if you spray over the whole head you’re creating weight.”
Voila! You have sexy Victoria’s Secret beach waves! Yes, it really is that simple.
