Broadway star Laura Benanti is expecting her first child, a baby girl, with husband Patrick Brown, in February, which makes her all the more eager for the joy of Christmas this year, as evidenced by a recent Instagram photo she posted showing her relaxing next to her well decorated tree. She called herself “a giant pregnant lady,” but she still looks glowing and gorgeous.
The Kinnelon native has been rocking pregnancy chic, showing off her baby bump and style savvy. In October, she revived her Melania Trump impression on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which plays up her striking resemblance to the soon to be First Lady, and earned her the accolade of one of the best performances of 2016 from The New York Times.
It was a role the She Loves Me star welcomed as a chance to spread her acting wings. Laura told The Daily Beast, “I’m grateful for any opportunity to show my comedic side. I’m moving away the last few years to try to break away from the idea that I’m a musical theater actress, or a serious actress. They like to put you in a box. It’s hard to pinpoint me.”
She also performed in November at Mayo Performing Arts Center’s 18th Annual Starlight Ball Gala at the Hilton Short Hills, an organization which is close to her heart. Laura told NorthJersey.com, “My mom is a voice teacher in Kinnelon, New Jersey, and she has some students who sing in a chorus who are involved with [Mayo’s Teen Performing Arts Company]. They’re doing so much good work for children with autism and special needs in the theater, so they asked if I would sing a few songs by myself, and then a song with the chorus.” She posted that she had “such a wonderful time” performing.
In early December, supper club Feinstein’s/54 Below threw her a baby shower, which included adorable cookies from her mother-in-law saying “A star is born.” She wrote on Instagram, “As I looked around the room that day and took in the shining faces of my family and friends, I was overwhelmed by how lucky I am, and how lucky this little girl is, to be surrounded by them.”
The Manhattan venue will also host one of her first performances as a new mom, one fittingly featuring Laura’s own mom, Linda Benanti. On May 5 and 6, 2017, Laura and Linda will star in The Story Goes On,” described on her website as “a musical journey through the special relationship between a mother and daughter.”
Here’s wishing Laura, her husband and baby-to-be a very happy holiday season!
