Garden Staters might be known for the accents, but one New Jersey resident just got recognition for her voice. Josette Diaz, a 17-year-old singer from Bergen County, landed a spot on Season 11 of The Voice on Monday night’s episode.

The Cresskill High School senior squeezed by for the last spot on judge Miley Cyrus‘ team after performing her version of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” and also played the guitar. Not only is the teen clearly excited to have made the cut on the show, but also gets to be on the team of her favorite artist.

Diaz has long loved music and has been showing off her superb skills in her high school choir, an a capella group, and local musical theater. In addition to the guitar, she also plays saxophone in the school band. The talented teen even shares her skills by teaching guitar to local children to raise money for college.

Though this is the first time Diaz became popular on the national stage, she had started to develop a fan base on her YouTube channel where she posted original songs and covers.

She joins another New Jersey teen, Wé McDonald of Paterson, on the show and both will continue on to the next round, which begins next week. They, along with 47 other contestant are competing for the top prize of a professional recording deal.
